Announcement of €25.4m for Our Balbriggan rejuvenation projects
The transformation of Ireland’s youngest town has taken a massive step forward with the announcement of the award of €25.4m for eight key Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Plan projects under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF).
The overall cost of the projects, to be completed by 2027, is anticipated to be €33.9m with Fingal County Council providing €8.5m to complete the planned public realm improvements.
With significant funding now secured and detailed plans in place, the rejuvenation and regeneration of Balbriggan can now take a major step forward and by 2027 the heart of the town will be transformed, according to the Balbriggan Leadership Group.
The Group have welcomed the award, announced by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD.
“This will create a more attractive place to live, work and visit,” said Professor Brian MacCraith, Chair of the Balbriggan Leadership Group.
“This investment in the public realm of Balbriggan will create the conditions for private investment, leading to the repurposing of existing vacant buildings and infill developments
“The re-development of buildings and disused areas will expand the available space in the town centre for community and commercial uses providing new amenities, green spaces and an improved public realm.”
The ambitious vision contained in the Balbriggan Rejuvenation Plan was the result of an historic community engagement which saw over 25% of residents outline their preferences for the future of our town.
From a menu of potential improvements, transforming the Main Street and connecting it to a reimagined Harbour area were the top choices across all age groups in a survey which will become a model for towns around the country.
The funding will help realise eight projects contained in the Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Plan: Quay Street, Harbour, 2-4 Dublin Street, the transformation of the Main Street – Green Corridor, Millpond Park, Railway Street, Promenade and Coastal Improvements and Castle to Castle Cycleway.
