Announcement of Swimming Pool for Balbriggan |
Balbriggan will be home to a new €10 million swimming pool. Castlelands, one kilometre south of the town (south of the area’s Link Road, directly opposite the site of a proposed new school), has been chosen by Fingal County Council as the location of the six-lane 25 metre pool. The new facility will incorporate a changing village, reception area with café and a viewing gallery. Subject to funding, construction could commence by the end of 2026. A part of Fingal County Council’s ongoing €54-57 million Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Programme, the provision of a public swimming pool was a key ask of the survey by Balbriggan.ie in 2019, aimed at shaping an order of priorities to transform the town. |

As Ireland saw record warm weather earlier this month, Balbriggan’s Front Beach came alive with swimmers, beach volleyball, picnics, paddlers, and more. It was a beautiful reminder of just how special the area is, and wonderful to see the community enjoying our vibrant beach. |

Balbriggan’s Front Strand has lost its ‘Poor’ status in an Environmental Protection Agency report on Bathing Water Quality, with multiple samples resulting in ‘Excellent’ ratings. Now, the EPA has deemed Front Strand to have changed status, and all-season notices advising people not to swim will be lifted. The Beach Management plans, introduced by Fingal County Council’s Environment section, identified site specific risks and included an action plan designed to try and mitigate the identified risks which are believed to have caused the poor water quality ratings in the first instance. Identified risks to bathing water quality included urban misconnections, urban waste water accidental releases, urban wastewater stormwater overflows, agricultural run-off, dog fouling, bird fouling, water pollution from oil leaks, and the challenges caused by heavy rain. Dr David Begg, Chairperson of the Our Balbriggan Leadership Group, which oversees Fingal County Council’s Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Programme, warmly welcomed the announcement. “A lot of work has been done to address issues at Front Strand over the last five years and it is great to finally see this effort reaping positive results." |

We are pleased to share our latest update, with a special focus on Harbour side, as part of the broader objectives of the rejuvenation scheme to enhance the town’s coastal and maritime environment. The €15m transformational works at Quay Street and the Harbour, on both sides of its famous viaduct, will redefine Balbriggan’s beach, harbour and coastline, creating an outstanding public amenity and drawing more visitors to the area. The scheme aims to enhance and protect the walled harbour, its lighthouse, piers and active fishing activity in this location for future generations. The redevelopment of the Quay Street and Harbour area is progressing at pace. Installation of new lighting, shoreside services, seating, storage, new paving, and underground services infrastructure is designed to improve functionality and accessibility for harbour users and the wider public. In addition to this the project will also include green enhancements to the River Bracken, planted gardens on the Plaza, increased seating, green park and play areas. The Quay Street, Mill Street and Harbour Road will become an integrated space which seamlessly links to the heart of the town. |
