Progress continues for Our Balbriggan with latest developments in the town.

Quay Street & Harbour area

On Friday, May 17th, sods were turned on the multi-million euro development as Minister for Housing, Local Government & Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, joined the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Adrian Henchy along with local councillors to mark the event.

The 19,300 square metre site will include a multi-purpose plaza area and linear park designed to host markets, events and festivals.

DeBruns site

The appointment of a design team for the redevelopment of the De Bruns site has been reached. An architect-led multi-disciplinary Integrated Design Team will help lead the way in the transformation of 6a-14 Bridge Street – a massive step in the town’s redevelopment plans.

Early local stakeholder engagement for the 10,000 square metre De Bruns site will begin shortly by Dubin City-based architects, McCullough Mulvin.

The plan is to link Millpond Park to a new park entrance at 14 Bridge Street to facilitate a pedestrian and cyclist route in the proposed mixed-use commercial, community and residential development, keeping the River Bracken at its heart and leading down to a transformed Quay Street & Harbour area.

Boathouse & Bathhouse

FCC has identified a low impact and appropriate use for the buildings as revived boathouses for Fingal Rowing Club and Bremore Scouts. In this video we hear from both Balbriggan groups how this conservation project will enhance their activities into the future.

The Boathouse and Bath House at King Strand, Bath Road, Balbriggan are heritage landmarks, with significant social and architectural histories stretching back to the late 19th century. The buildings have suffered badly from the combined effects of vandalism and weather, and have been largely roofless for a number of years. They are currently in the ownership and care of Fingal County Council. Enabling Works commissioned by the council are nearing completion in May 2024 which will inform further permanent works, and a possible re-use.

The recent clearing of vegetation and debris from inside and outside the two structures has allowed access to be re-established and surveys of the buildings and ground to be undertaken. Stabilisation of the gable walls as well as consolidation and some re-building of the tops of the walls, has made the building safer and less prone to further decay and collapse in the medium-term. From what has been revealed, it should be possible to salvage these structures for a new purpose, appropriate to its coastal location. The next stage for this unique set of maritime buildings and their slipway, is the preparation of a design proposal for submission to the planning authorities, with associated flood risk, environmental and archaeological assessments and mitigations.

Spotlight on Integration

During the Spring of this year, organisations and local communities in the town were highlighted by the Our Balbriggan Programme Office, to celebrate diversity and respond to challenges faced by minority ethnic groups in the town.

Three art projects were launched in April in partnership with Cáirde, Balbriggan Integration Forum and An Garda Síochána to encourage stronger working relations between young people and the Gardí. These projects also aim to highlight the various strengths in the town as well as the vibrancy and hard work of the community and organisations working in and for Balbriggan.

You can learn more about these projects by watching the three videos of the ‘Spotlight on Integration’ series on the Our Balbriggan YouTube.
